Art Museum Orlando

The Art Museum Orlando was founded in 1924 with the goal of enriching the cultural life of Florida by providing excellence in the visual arts – and it has excelled at its task.

The museum presents ten to twelve exhibitions a year on-site and another 13 exhibitions off-site.

Most people spend an hour or two viewing the exhibitions at the Art Museum Orlando. The museum also has two “discovery centers” dedicated to activities and educational programs for children. The centers allow adults and children to learn new ways to experience art through interactive activities and studies. The museum also has Gallery Activity Bags, which help visitors relate to an exhibit, free of charge.

The Art Museum Orlando has three standing collections:

The American Art Collection consists of paintings, drawings, prints, photos and sculptures dating back to the 18th century. The collection includes works by John Singer Sargent, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Ansel Adams to name a few.

The Art of the Ancient Americas Collection contains artifacts, made of ceramic, jade, stone, cloth, gold and silver, from more than 30 different cultural groups and date from 2000 B.C. to A.D. 1521.

The African Art Collection features works from several different regions of Africa including works by the Dogon, Zulu and Yoruba. There are also several works from Cameroon. The collection is mostly of beadwork, fabric, wooden figures, masks, metal works and carved ivory and ceramics.
